APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 3, 2009. Notification will be made by e-mail in late April 2009.
Application Document:
Page 1: A completed application cover page (see below; you can copy and paste this into your document and insert the required information)
Page 2: A one-page proposal outlining your project and its appropriateness for the ARP.
Page 3: A one-page resume.
Page 4: A one-page description of work samples (see below), including contextual information as needed (for example, if you are providing excerpts from a larger work, describe the complete piece and contextualize the excerpt for us). If your work samples are collaborations between you and someone else not included in your proposal, be very, very clear as to your role in the sample you are presenting to us.
All of these written materials MUST be sent by e-mail in a single MS Word document readable by Mac OS-X computers. This means your application, proposal, resume and work sample description are to be included in ONE document, no more than four pages total. DO NOT send separate documents. DO NOT use designerly formatting — keep it simple, using text only. DO NOT include images incorporated into the document. DO NOT send additional information or pages. DO NOT send it as a PDF. DO NOT mail it.
Send your Application Document to Lou@ExSoSt.org by 9:00pm on the deadline date, April 3, 2009.
Work samples:
All work samples must be playable/viewable/audible using a Mac OS-X computer; audio CDs will be played using i-Tunes, video DVDs will be played using DVD Player, still images will be viewed using Preview. Be sure your work samples conform to the requirements and are accessible through one of these three programs! All work samples should be clearly labeled with the same name(s) as your application document so there is no confusion about their connection to your e-mailed application.
1. Sound artists: three samples of recent previous work, each sample should be NO MORE than 5 minutes long and NO LESS than 2 minutes long (unless the complete work is by its nature less than 2 minutes long). Format can be audio-CD and/or video-DVD. Samples can be provided on separate discs or on one clearly marked track-separated or chaptered disc. No other formats!
2. Non-sound artists: three samples of recent previous work, presented in a way that best represents your work. By definition, this category is for non-sound artists, so your work samples do not have to include sound. You may include up to three images of each static work, and up to 5 minutes of video for temporal work. For still images, provide JPEGs on a disc only (no prints, slides, etc.), less than 2 meg for each image; for video, provide a video-DVD. If you do include sound-only works, provide an audio-CD. No other formats!
3. Audio post-production for cinema: two samples of previous film/video works. Each sample must be NO LONGER than 5 minutes and NO SHORTER than 2 minutes (unless the complete work is by its nature less than 2 minutes long). Provide each on a separate video-DVD or on a single disc with clearly navigable menu buttons. No other formats!
Work samples must be mailed, shipped, or dropped off at ESS. The address:
2009 Artist Residency Program
Experimental Sound Studio
5925 N Ravenswood
Chicago, IL 60660
Postmark or shipping date must be on or before the deadline, April 3, 2009. If you drop off your work samples, deliver them to us by 9:00PM on the deadline date, April 3, 2009. There is a large mail slot right next to our entrance door accessible from the street if no one is at ESS to accept your package, which may be the case.
We realize your work or work samples may not fit exactly into these categories or requirements, and we are willing to discuss that and to make adjustments as needed, so if you have questions or need clarification, do not hesitate to e-mail or call, but DO IT WELL AHEAD of the deadline for submission! We may not be able to return e-mails or calls in less than a few days time. Telephone: 773-769-1069; e-mail: Lou@ExSoSt.org.
